I grew up in a pub on the harbour of a busy fishing port so boats and harbour artists were part every day life, I went to the local Community College and was selected by the art teacher as a gifted student and attended Art College on Saturdays with 6 other students, from the wider catchment area, for advanced tuition.
After leaving school it was a natural step to go to sea on the local trawlers, after 5 years I took the merchant trawler skippers ticket at Warsash Naval College in Southampton and had many further fruitful years deep-sea fishing as 1st mate. Eventually the call of the land drew me and I came ashore, landscaping for a while before re-training as an adult trainer in basic and key skills. I painted the sea to fill the void, to feel the nature within, eventually painting full time both as a harbour artist in the season and in my studio.
After many years I have developed a love for watercolour as my favoured medium, I may return to oils in the future and from time to time produce an oil to remind myself of the difference, it's a learning process and I hope that will continue to the end.
I paint from sketches of current boats, my memories of being a fisherman at sea and from historical records, I have many reference books and there is much available online these days with public libraries and records. I try to be as accurate and true as possible, always remembering to enjoy the creative processes involved in producing a piece of artwork. I hope my pictures enrich the lives of those who live with them.

I Started to paint for a living in 2005 when l got a harbour artist's licence from Brixham Harbour Master, who bought a painting for himself during the interview. l worked on the good days during the season at king Quay where l sold prints and painted a picture on the day which usually sold, I had a window in the town at a local shop which sold for me all year round and a shop which sold art and health food a little further out of town which displayed my pictures for sale also.
During the off season my Wife and l would hire stalls at local weekend indoor events. I am recently retired but still enjoy painting and selling to those who are interested.

I take commissions and am always open to negotiation.
