Deo Volente BM143 Stowing the Gear.
Stowing the gear is getting the trawl on board. With beam trawlers, if not too rough, laying beam on the sea can assist, it's a matter of timing the drop with the roll. Deo Volente was a beam trawler working out of Brixham here in the 1970's.

"HMS Victory Squaring the Yards"
completed November 30th 2020
No particular occasion just a study of HMS Victory
The term "Squaring the Yards" was the learning behind this painting, a term of nautical origin from C18.
It meant that the yards, the spars that carried the sails, were to be set at right angles to the keel line from bow to stern, a state that was known as "square by the lifts and braces" if the spars were set horizontal. (The lifts and braces were part of the running rigging; the lifts raised and lowered the yards and the braces turned them). At sea, "squaring the yards" meant that the ship sailed directly downwind.
After anchoring, "square the yards" was an instruction to make the ship tidy and ready for sailing again.

Off the Island of Espiritu Santo 1774 - Vanuatu
completed 11th June 2020
"HMS Resolution" had beautiful Stern for the period, reclining Greek male and female flanked by 2 lions. A voyage of discovery.
Based on journal of captain Cook aboard HMS Resolution with HMS Adventure - second voyage
Thursday 25th August 1774
After doubling the Cape we found the Coast trend away to the South and to form a very large and deep bay of which the land above mentioned was its western boundaries. Every thing conspired to make us believe this was the Bay of St Philip and St James discovered by Quiros in 1606. To determine this point it was necessary to search it to the very bottom for at this time we could see no end to it,
Water colour 22" X 18" mounted and framed

“A Fortuitous Meeting”
complete October 13th 2020
Inspired by this account: On August 25th 1793 Captain Horatio Nelson, on HMS Agamemnon, was sent to Turin and Naples to inform British ministers of Vice Admiral Hood’s reliance on Spain and Sardinia to hold Toulon. Along the way he fell in with HMS Tartar and learned Hood needed troops as a republican army was approaching Toulon, fresh from the sack of Marseilles. Nelson’s charm, determination and professionalism helped him to obtain Neapolitan troops under the recent alliance: with Sir William Hamilton’s support he secured 4000 men before Hood’s official request reached Naples.
